The project

How do organizations accomplish profit-seeking goals while also being socially and environmentally responsible?
In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, the pursuit of profit is no longer the sole priority for organizations yet achieving and maintaining a balance across those diverse goals is quite challenging. The MATCH project is dedicated to understanding what factors contribute to firms’ success or failure in doing so considering for their willingness and abilities.
Willingness refers to the intentions and motivations of organizations to respond to the diverse array of pressures emanating from both internal and external stakeholders. Ability, on the other hand, delves into the resources, capabilities, and strategic initiatives that organizations can deploy to enact meaningful change while maintaining profitability.
MATCH research is conducted at three levels:
Tensions in Inventive Activity

Focused on the chemical industry, particularly pesticides, we investigate when and why companies transition from environmentally harmful inventions to sustainable alternatives amidst public scrutiny.
Tensions in Process Innovation

By studying industries like leather and apparel, we explore how companies transition to cleaner production processes, addressing the challenges of compatibility and cost.
Tensions in Value Chain Dynamics

Analyzing value chains, we assess how different actors within these chains perceive and address sustainability tensions, impacting overall alignment and action.
