It distinguishes between environmental upgrading processes and their outcomes, considering multiple actors’ perspectives.
A case study of Kenya–UK horticulture value chains shows that despite environmental upgrading practices required by UK supermarkets, Kenyan farmers primarily experienced environmental downgrading, with negative impacts extending beyond the value chain.
