Final MATCH Project Workshop: “Managing sustainability tensions for change”
Co-organizers: Valentina De Marchi (ESADE business school & University of Padova); Francesco Rullani (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice), Elisa Giuliani (University of Pisa), Anne Jacqueminet (ESSEC Business School)
The MATCH research project invites contributions to its final workshop, focusing on the tensions organizations face when pursuing sustainability-oriented innovation. We welcome short papers or work-in-progress that engage with one of the project’s three core thematic areas:
1. Tensions in Inventive Activity. How and why do firms shift from environmentally harmful innovations toward sustainable alternatives? What drives or hinders these transitions, especially in sectors under public scrutiny, such as chemicals and pesticides?
2. Tensions in Process Innovation. What are the operational, economic, and strategic challenges of implementing cleaner production processes? How do firms manage these tensions in industries such as leather and apparel?
3. Tensions in Value Chain Dynamics. How do different actors within a value chain perceive and respond to sustainability challenges? What tensions arise between alignment and fragmentation, and how do they affect collective outcomes?
We are particularly interested in contributions that speak to the interplay between firms’ willingness (intentions and motivations) and ability (resources and capabilities) to act sustainably. The workshop will feature presentation sessions with Q&A and a closing collective discussion to reflect on future research directions and opportunities for collaboration.
